In 1989, my husband Brock and I were honored to
work as assistants on a sculpture project in Herb Kane's studio. It was during
this period that Herb created Pele Dreaming, and it was inspiring to watch him
bring this beautiful sculpture to life with meticulous attention to every
detail. Molds were made from impressions of lava at the sacred Place of Refuge,
to form Pele's flowing lava hair. As the sculpture progressed and Herb began to
sculpt Pele's eyes in the traditional way, he paused in reflection and then
proceeded to close her eyes into a dreaming state.
In so doing, an entirely new aspect of Pele's personality was revealedthe
serene, gentle and compassionate aspect of her, so revered by those who have
known her through the ages.
Soon after, Herb arranged for us to replicate the sculpture for him in our
studio on the island. We are honored by his trust and take our responsibility
to bring Pele's image to the world very much to heart. We never cease to be
amazed by Pele's powerful presence in the studio, and the awesome feeling of
working with a goddess.
